Each suite has its own private deck, tea and coffee making facility, a bar fridge and safe. Inside the main lodge

Thaba Lodge Black Rhino Facilities

The main lodge area is an expansive inside open plan area with a fully fitted kitchen, walk-in fridge, scullery with dishwasher, dining room, casual lounge with flat screen TV (DSTV), reading lounge with library, bar with a drinks fridge and ice-making machine and pool table, and fireplaces for the cool winter months.

The expansive outside raised deck is equipped with a gas Weber braai, dining table and loungers with views of Thaba mountain after which the lodge is named. A splash pool and sundeck near the main lodge area are the perfect spot to enjoy the heat of the day with a colddrink in hand.

An elevated walkway takes you to the outside boma with an outdoor wood braai area and further on to a 2-tier game viewing deck with loungers. The lodge’s perimeter has a discreet electrified fence and whilst it keeps the elephants and lion at bay, Nyala and Impala may hop the fence for a few tasty lodge foliage treats. A small waterhole attracts animals outside the permiter fence. There is cellphone coverage at the lodge and limited complimentary WiFi withing the main lodge area.

The lodge is serviced by 2 housekeeping staff and a gardener and is managed by Zander and Marike, both qualified FGASA game rangers and are avaialble to assist as necessary, to take guests on game drives in open safari vehicles twice a day (included in the daily rate). Guests will need to cater and cook their own meals or are welcome to bring along their own caterer providing one of the chalets for their accommodation.

PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK & GAME RESERVE

Some of the most beautiful scenery within the entire park can be viewed in the Mankwe Dam region. The dam is the largest body of water in the game reserve. This makes it the perfect place to spot a wide variety of animals including water-buck, wildebeest, zebra and impala, that make a stopover on the grassland bordering the dam.

For bird lovers, there is a bird hide very close to the water’s edge. Make sure you take note of the fish eagles, kingfishers and cormorants circling the dam. All of these places provide many a fantastic opportunity to photograph the plentiful array of fauna and flora.

Pilanesberg National Park is located in the Bojanala Region within the North West Province. With an area of 550km², it is the fourth largest park in South Africa. The volcano crater in which the park is situated erupted 1300 million years ago. Pilanesberg was originally owned by 3 of the local tribes. Many of the Stone Age and Iron Age sites around the reserve show proof of the presence of man.

In 1979, Operation Genesis was launched. Operation Genesis was designed to reinforce the homegrown game population in the area. As part of the initiative, 110 kilometres of game fence was put up as well as the 188 kilometres of roads that were established.  Another plan of action put into place involved 6000 animals being introduced to the area. In the years that followed, Operation Genesis has been expanded on. Today, there are over 7 000 animals, 360 bird species, and more than 200 kilometres of roads.
