Rhino Sands Luxury Tented Safari Camp Manyoni

A five-star tented luxury safari destination designed to bring an authentic safari experience in traditional East African style to Kwa-Zulu Natal

Situated in the big five Manyoni Private Game Reserve, Rhino Sands Safari Camp is a five-star tented luxury safari destination designed to bring an authentic safari experience in traditional East African style to Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Back in 2005, the Airton and Alexander families launched Rhino River Lodge in Manyoni Private Game Reserve. Rhino River Lodge provides a comfortable, personal and affordable private safari experience, and has become one of the premier private safari lodges in the area with a reputation for excellent customer service and superior value for money.

In October of 2017 the Airton family opened their new safari venture in Manyoni Private Game Reserve, Rhino Sands Safari Camp. The camp was created to reflect their love of safari and commitment to conservation. The ecofriendly luxury tented camp is designed to offer safari guests an intimate way to reconnect with nature and one another in classic safari style. The Rhino Sands team were each individually selected in large part due to their passion for safari and their love of Africa’s wild places. The team is overseen by Dale and Shannon Airton.

Designed to bring an authentic safari experience in traditional East African style to Kwa-Zulu Natal, Rhino Sands Safari Camp is an 8-bed luxury tented camp set on a peninsula in the Msunduze River in Manyoni Private Game Reserve. The entire camp is set under canvas upon wooden platforms within the riverine forest. The main camp area features a reception office, casual bar lounge space, formal lounge, and both formal and casual dining areas. There is also a large boma area complete with bush oven for guests to enjoy dining fireside beneath the stars.

Guests can stay in one of four luxurious custom-built private tented suites located amid beautiful riverine forest, each featuring a private living area, outdoor shower, and swimming pool. Each tent opens completely on three sides so guests can immerse themselves in the wilderness experience. All tents have stunning views of the river bed below. The camp has been designed and decorated with an emphasis on the romance of the classical safari experience, with a nod towards traditional safari styling but including all the modern luxuries.

In between game drives, guests can take advantage of the camp facilities. Upon returning from the morning drive a decadent breakfast is served. Guests can relax at the camp’s lounge or bar deck and watch the myriad of bird life in the riverine forest. A light lunch is served mid afternoon and guests can find respite from the heat in their private swimming pool while watching the reserve’s animals drink from watering holes in the river below. The second game drive heads out in the late afternoon and includes a scenic sundowner stop. After returning to camp the chef will prepare a gourmet three-course dinner, featuring some of the flavours and ingredients South Africa is famous for. As the day draws to a close spend time with us having a night cap around the campfire sharing stories or retire to your tent to fall asleep to the night time melodies of the bush.

At Rhino Sands, we embrace the idea of a bespoke safari experience. While the daily rhythm revolves around game drives and meal times, each day is set to be a little bit different than the one before. With a maximum of only eight guests in camp at any time, your stay is guaranteed to be a personal and exclusive experience.

Rhino Sands is ecofriendly and has been constructed with minimal disruption to the natural forest, highlighting rather than dominating the surrounding environment. Electricity runs entirely on a solar installation. Offering organic coffee and teas, wines produced using biodynamic methods, seasonal menus, and biodegradable and organic amenities, the environment and our impact upon it has been considered with every decision made in running Rhino Sands.

The experience revolves around two daily safari drives within Manyoni Private Game Reserve. The reserve is one of the premier game-viewing destinations in Kwa-Zulu Natal and is home to the Big 5 along with African wild dogs and cheetahs, as well as large numbers of all the more common African animals. One of the most special moments on game drive are the rest stops, in the morning for coffee and tea and in the evening for sundowner drinks. Guests get a chance to pause and absorb the bush around them while stretching their legs and enjoying refreshments and snacks. We suggest guests take this time to enjoy an exceptional wilderness moment.

In 2004, 17 private properties in the northern Zululand area dropped their fences forming what is today known as Manyoni Private Game Reserve (formerly Zululand Rhino Reserve). The impetus for forming the reserve was to provide a home to a population of black rhinos as part of the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project. The joining of the properties created a 23,000-hectare private game reserve in the heart of Zululand, in one of the most animal-rich and species-diverse areas of South Africa.

In addition to the black rhinos, the reserve is now home to all of the big five (rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion) and has seen the re-introduction of two endangered carnivore species, cheetahs and African wild dogs. We have become one of the premier wildlife-viewing destinations in Kwa-Zulu Natal and we are one of the most beautiful reserves in the area with varied landscapes from acacia thornveld to open savannah to riverine forest. Game drives on the reserve are regulated and coordinated by the ecotourism businesses to minimize the impact on the environment and the stress on the animals and to provide guests a better and more intimate game viewing experience.
