At the foot of the legendary Ghost Mountain in Mkuze, Northern KwaZulu-Natal lies the enchanting Ghost Mountain Inn. The 5 acres of lush rolling gardens stretch down to the water on the boundary of the property. The flourishing old trees and succulent fruit attract many species of birdlife, for which Mkuze is well known, and the garden also features a bird hide and jetty for both birding and relaxing. There are several quiet spaces to sit in comfort under the trees and enjoy the tranquil gardens. The hotel offers two pools. The larger of the two is situated in the garden in front of the hotel, surrounded by umbrellas and loungers where the second, a rock pool in a more secluded area of the Spa, offers a truly unique experience.

ZULULAND & THE ELEPHANT COAST
The Elephant Coast, situated in the north eastern part of KwaZulu Natal, borders Swaziland in the north west and Mozambique in the north and is also known as Zululand and Maputaland. The area offers an unforgettable opportunity to retrace the paths of past traders, explorers, and tribesmen, to view traditional homesteads amongst tribal communities and to revel in the areas unspoilt beauty. Ghost Mountain Inn genuinely provides the perfect base to explore all that this amazing area has to offer. Take a trip south to the iSimangoliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage site and Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve for an unforgettable journey into nature. Adventure north to Ndumu Game Reserve or Tembe Elephant Park, home to the last wild elephants of southern Africa, or view traditional fish kraals at Kosi Bay. Visit Kosi Bay or Sodwana Bay, where endless golden sand hugs the coastline of Maputaland and some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving reefs are to be found.

KOSI BAY
Kosi Bay, near the Mozambique border in the north, has a system of four lakes that run parallel to the sea for 18km. For those with a 4×4 visit the Kosi river mouth for a beach experience bar none.

SODWANA BAY
Rated as one of the ten best diving sites in the world, Sodwana offers something for the more adventuresome. Activities such as diving, snorkelling, quad biking and horse riding can be arranged. In season, turtle watching at night is also available. Sodwana is about an hour and a half’s drive from Mkuze if you need to drive on tar or about an hour on a much shorter dirt road.

TEMBE ELEPHANT PARK & NDUMU GAME RESERVE
Before being proclaimed as a Park in 1981, elephants roamed freely in this area. Tembe offers a Big 5 experience and is accessible by tar road but you need a 4×4 to drive in the park or one can arrange for game drives. The Ndumu Game Reserve is one of the most interesting and most attractive in South Africa. It lies on the flood plain of the Pongola River, an expanse of wetland with tropical and subtropical habitats.

ST LUCIA & THE ISIMANGALISO WETLAND PARK
Kosi Bay, near the Mozambique border in the north, has a system of four lakes that run parallel to the sea for 18km. For those with a 4×4 visit the iSimangaliso Wetland Park which was listed for its outstanding natural values as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1999. These natural values are exceptional biodiversity, ecological processes and superlative scenic beauty. The town of St. Lucia is a beautiful South African village. Enjoy a cruise on St Lucia estuary. Visit the Eastern shores set between the estuary and the ocean. Whale and turtle tours are available in season. Deep sea fishing, snorkeling and canoeing can be arranged.

BORDER CAVE
Border cave has been occupied by humans, virtually continuously, for about 190 000 years and is one of only a few archaeological sites in the world with a complete stratigraphic record. More than a million artefacts have been excavated from the site including the Lebombo Bone, dated to 35,000 BC making it the oldest known artefact linked to the basic mathematical activity of counting.

MUZI PANS
Muzi Pan is a 15km stretch of water within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park forming a natural boundary between the park and the KwaJobe tribal land. The southern end of the pan borders Mkuze Game Reserve. Both shores of the pan boast a wide variety of bird species (The possibility to add a Pel’s Fishing Owl to your list). The pan is a base for a wide variety of game, as well as the numerous resident hippo, and offers a magnificent nature experience either on a canoe or guided walk.

HLUHLUWE & IMFOLOZI GAME RESERVE
The oldest game park in Africa (along with nearby St Lucia), this reserve was proclaimed to prevent the white rhino from becoming extinct. Eighty species of mammal (including the big five) and in excess of 300 species of birds are supported in this 96,000HA reserve. Apart from the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, pay a visit to Illala Weavers’ zulu craft museum. There is also an African cat rescue centre near the town as well as a Zulu cultural history village. .

LAKE JOZINI
Lake Jozini lies in a dramatic setting at the foot of the Lebombo Mountains and is one of South Africa’s largest dams. There are several exquisite gorges abound with cycads as well a wide variety of birds. On the western side of the dam one might have the privilege of seeing the likes of elephant, rhino, hippo and crocodile. .

UMKHUZE GAME RESERVE
The reserve harbours an astonishing diversity of habitats ranging from the eastern slopes of the Lebombo Mountains to stretches of rolling acacia savannah, swamps, woodlands and riverine forest. Wildlife includes black and white rhino, elephant, giraffe, leopard, cheetah, buffalo and a multitude of plains game. Lion were reintroduced to the park in 2013 making it a Big 5 reserve. The birding is exceptional – 420 species recorded. uMkhuze offers a Fig Forest Walk (5-6hrs) which is highly recommended.

A 3 to 4 hour drive either in the morning or late afternoon in this beautiful big five reserve. Enjoy a variety of wildlife, birdlife and Zululand scenery.

MANYONI PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI
A 3 to 4 hour drive more for a range of photographers. The vehicle has padded bars for stabilising cameras and storage boxes for equipment. Drives are limited to a maximum of 6 guests to allow for easier movement.

MANYONI WALKING SAFARI
Explore Manyoni on foot with a focus on the ‘smaller things’ in the reserve; tracks, plants, insects but there is a possibility of coming across some of the big 5 wildlife. Walks are limited to 4 guest above the age of 16 due to the dangerous game in the reserve.

With more than 420 bird species on record, Mkuze and the surrounding area is renowned as a mecca for bird lovers. Some of the specials one might go in search of are: Mangrove King fisher, African Broadbill, Pink Throated Twin Spot, Blue Billed Fire Finch, Narina trogon.

NIGHT DRIVE
3 – 4 hours
Experience the African night with its magnificent skies and the possibility of nocturnal species such as ant-bear (aardvark), leopard, genets, night jars and a host of smaller creatures. The night also allows one the opportunity to use other senses and to relax to the sounds and aroma of Africa.

Lake Jozini lies in a dramatic setting at the foot of the Lebombo Mountains and is one of South Africa’s largest dams. The 13 varieties of fish found in the dam include tilapia, catfish, mud fish, carp and the sought after tiger fish. A catch and release policy for the tigers is promoted and anglers are encouraged to retain only one trophy fish each per day, releasing the live smaller ones.

A leisurely drive up the Lebombo Mountains through enthralling scenery with magnificent views of Lake Jozini allows guests to unwind and inhale the wonder and grace of rural Africa. If the drive is arranged in the evening, sundowners in this gorgeous location should not be missed!

CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

A unique experience and one of authenticity, the Myeni Cultural Experience includes a visit to a local homestead as well as the chance to interact with members of the Myeni family. With prior arrangement one can also experience an unforgettable visit to a Sangoma with a bone reading if desired, Stick fighting, and/or a sampling of traditional food and drink. Finish the experience with a drive through the Lebombo Mountains taking in some of the area’s awe-inspiring views as well as the rural life that surrounds you. Optional extras that include food & beer tasting, a Sangoma visit and reading or Zulu stick fighting can be added to a cultural homestead visit, by prior arrangements.

WALKING SAFARIS
Walking safaris are a truly immersive way to experience this rustic landscape. Walk in the steps of our ancestors while the sounds and smells of the African bush awaken your senses as you saunter along riverbeds, hike through myth and legend and explore some of our proudest African landscapes. All of our walks are accompanied by guides who are well versed in local history and culture, as well as the fauna and flora of the area.

UMKHUZE FIG FOREST WALK
5-6hrs
Spoil the senses to a remarkable fig forest walk as you explore the spellbinding beauty of natural Africa. Although the Fig Forest Walk is only about two hours long, the walk itself is situated deep in the uMkhuze Game Reserve so the activity includes a game drive to and from the walk. This walk is not strenuous but does require traversing two short swing bridges over the beautiful uMkuze River. The walk meanders under the magnificent canopy of giant sycamore figs, the oldest of which is estimated at 450 years. The silence of the forest is broken by a multitude of bird calls typified by the wail of Trumpeter Hornbills, while special sightings have included the Pels Fishing Owl, the African Broadbill and the Blue Mantled Flycatcher.

GHOST MOUNTAIN HIKE
3-4hrs
Take a walk amongst beauty, myth and history in a hike to the top of the Ghost Mountain (Tshaneni) and take in the expansive view of the area, including the battlegrounds of the 1884 Battle of Tshaneni. Local legend has it that the mountain is haunted and there are claims that, at times, lights can be seen emanating from the summit and eerie sounds can be heard. This intriguing mountain is a protected site of cultural and historical significance and a hike up the eastern side to learn more about the history and folklore of the mountain and the surrounding area is an absolute must.

MKUZE RIVER BIRD WALK
1-2hrs
This is a gentle walk that leaves the hotel and traverses the dam in front of the hotel into the Mkuze riverbed and along to the old weir. A large number of birds both water and open savannah species are to be seen with specials including Palm Swifts, White-eared Barbets, Giant and Malachite Kingfishers, Black Coucal and many others. The scenery offers up wonderful views of both Ghost Mountain and the Lebombo Mountain Range.

THE LAWNS
The Ghost Mountain Inn has become renowned for hosting memorable weddings under the giant old fig tree in the front garden. Dance the night away under the stars in the circular dance floor.

THE BOMA
For a more African bush-themed wedding, the boma provides a more traditional venue for hosting your wedding. The Zulu huts, sand floors, wooden boma and a great view over the water towards Ghost Mountain provide an unusual backdrop for your special day. Accommodates a maximum of 50 guests

THE NDUMU ROOM
This purpose built function space is complimented with its own private patio and courtyard with a cascading water feature. The most private venue on the property that allows for all-weather functions greater flexibility for decorating for your special day. Accommodates a maximum of 120 guests.
