FUGITIVES DRIFT BATTLEFIELDS:

The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 is famous throughout the English-speaking world for the great battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. The spectacular Fugitives’ Drift property, a 5000 acre Natural Heritage Site, overlooks both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, and includes the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives attempting to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment.  Take part in Fugitives’ Drift’s awe-inspiring battlefield tours, which bring the battles of Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana to life, leaving one with a deep and tangible insight into some of the most moving of South Africa’s battlefields.

Five star accommodation, world-class battlefield tours, abundant game and birdlife, superb food and wine, and breathtaking views out over Zululand and the Fugitives Drift Battlefields sites make for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The 5,000 acre Fugitives’ Drift Game Reserve which is a registered Natural Heritage Site and is teeming with wildlife, consisting of Giraffe, zebra, kudu, nyala, impala, blesbok, wildebeest, waterbuck, hartebeest, duiker, mountain reed buck, bushbuck, jackal, karakul, porcupines and monkeys, and over 250 species of birds. Our four horses are as comfortable around the giraffe as they are the zebra and wildebeest; a horse ride through the reserve will offer the most fantastic views of this remarkable property and its flora and fauna. A walk down to Fugitives’ Drift on the Buffalo River will afford an opportunity not only to swim in pools and rapids, but also to try your hand at a spot of fishing and you can also follow the walking trails into the heart of the reserve. The 22km river frontage offers superb fishing. Game walks, horse riding and hiking are all available.

Fugitives Drift Accommodation

The Main Lodge

The main lodge is situated on the site of the original Rattray homestead where David’s parents Peter and Gillian came for their holidays and here the seeds of this unique operation took root in those early years. Spacious, luxury en-suite cottages each have a private verandah affording views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. Another feature of the Lodge is the beautiful, shady, well established garden, home to innumerable birds, and the most spectacular large swimming pool situated on a secluded spur on the lip of the Buffalo River gorge. Enjoy superb cuisine, a unique fusion of home and modern flavours, in the splendid atmosphere of a veritable museum of Zulu War memorabilia.

Fugitives Drift Guest House

The Guest House

In its original state, this was the home of Mr Johan Potgieter and his family. “Mr Pot” was immortalised in Gillian Rattray’s award winning book “The Springing of the Year”. He was one of the great storytellers of this area. Mr Pot’s house has been turned into the most charming sitting and dining room, filled with fascinating memorabilia. The original verandahs have been retained. It also has an outside eating area which has a stunning view across a plain with Isandlwana in the distance. Guest House Rooms have large, en-suite bedrooms that are individually decorated and all have private verandahs with sweeping views of the reserve and surrounding battlefields. The Guest House boasts a sparkling pool that overlooks Isandlwana and the indigenous bushveld.

Umzinyathi & Kwa-George accommodation

Umzinyathi & Kwa-George

Umzinyathi & Kwa-George is a charming stone and corrugated iron roof farmhouse building built in the 1920’s. It was the home of George Buntting, who was an expert on the Anglo-Zulu War. The farmhouse is at the top of the reserve and has a wonderful view of Isandlwana. After major renovations in 2015, it has three en-suite bedrooms, a sitting room with a fire place, a dining room, and a kitchen. Although the accommodation is self-catering, guests may choose to have some or all meals at the Lodge or Guest House at an additional cost. Should guests decide to take this accommodation, they will need to travel to and from the Lodge or the Guest House for tours and/ or meals (a 5-10 minute drive).

Rorkes Drift Battlefield Storytelling

Fugitives Drift Battlefields:  The Anglo – Zulu War of 1879 & Battlefields Storytelling

In 1879, the British invaded Zululand. The central of the three major invading columns forded the Buffalo River at Rorke’s Drift. Within days Lord Chelmsford’s invasion was in jeopardy. Part of his central column had been almost annihilated at Isandlwana, in a battle rated as one of the greatest military disasters in British colonial history. A few survivors struggled back into Natal, crossing the mighty Buffalo River at the Fugitives’ Drift. Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill died in a gallant attempt to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment, earning the first posthumous Victoria Crosses in history. A great wing of the Zulu army went on to attack the British garrison at Rorke’s Drift, and these warriors were beaten off in a battle that lasted all night; an action that saw the awarding of 11 VCs and 5 DCMs.

Fugitives’ Drift Lodge and Guest House is renowned for its flagship battlefield tours to Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, which are conducted daily. These thought provoking and often emotionally charged tours leave our guests with a more profound appreciation of modern-day South Africa. Long family associations with the area and its people allow Fugitives’ Drift to offer unique Zulu perspectives on these remarkable battles.
