Conservation-focused safari

Safari with purpose

Hluhluwe iMfolozi Game Reserve Africa’s oldest proclaimed Game Reserve Hluhluwe. iMfolozi Park, Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.

The iMfolozi Game Reserve, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa is home to an astounding number of what is probably the most intriguing animal found in the wild, the African Elephant. Join world renowned elephant expert and wildlife veterinarian Dr Johan Marais, author of “The Great Tuskers of Africa” and Natalie Knibbs, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Honorary Officer, Tour Operator and conservation ambassador on this exclusive Elephant Experience to study and explore, amongst other topics, the complex social structures of cows and bulls and their intriguing behavioural patterns, their importance to wildlife areas and their amazing and peculiar anatomy whilst gaining an insight into the long term effects of the ivory trade. Johan will also touch on the rhino poaching crisis, habitat loss and political conflict in Africa that has resulted in a steep decline in both White and Black rhino in the wild. The black rhino is now classed as critically endangered while numbers for White rhino are plummeting, especially in South Africa, where the poaching crisis is at its peak.

Our days will be spent tracking these incredible animals in the reserve and spending time with them, learning and recognising behaviours by open 4×4 vehicle as well as on foot. Insightful discussions will be held in the comfort of the lodge. This unique experience is aimed at anyone and everyone that has a keen interest in elephants and rhinos! Numbers are limited for personal attention and an exclusive experience. 6 delegates only, subject to availability. This is not a photographic safari however, photographic opportunities abound! Book your spot and stay four nights in iMfolozi and leave here with a deep insight into the life of elephants and the severe poaching pressure rhino and elephant are currently under.

Game drive safaris are conducted in specially adapted open game viewing vehicles, with professional guides (minimum 6 guests + Johan and Natalie per vehicle). To preserve our wilderness no off-road driving is practiced. In addition to driving on our private concession within the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park we also have unlimited access to the greater Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park where you have the opportunity to spot the Big 5. Our guides meet the stringent requirements of Ezemvelo Parks Authority and senior guides hold the highest guiding qualifications possible in South Africa, to ensure that your encounters with the African bush are exciting, informative and safe. We will also be including game walks with a well-known local walking guide and/or one of his colleagues who has been conducting walking trails in this area for many years – this man is one of incredible knowledge and a deep respect and love for Africa’s wildlife and wild spaces. Elephant sightings are more ad hoc on foot and, in the summer months, the small breeding herds often assemble into a mega herd of some 200 animals usually congregating in the southern section of the park. Please note: +-3 hour morning and afternoon walks; Subject to a guide availability; A medical certificate of fitness is required for  people of 65 years & older wishing to walk. During part of each day, we will retreat to the comforts of the lodge and enjoy insightful, engaging presentations and discussions on Elephant and Rhino. Times will be flexible and dependent on wildlife sightings during the day.

You will be accommodated in Luxury Bush Villas at Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge comprising twin/double bedroom en-suite with separate toilet, luxurious shower, private wooden deck, mini bar, fireplace, overhead fan, air conditioning.
