Biyela Lodge / Mthembu Lodge– iMfolozi Game Reserve

Mfolozi Big 5 Game Reserve offers its guests the opportunity to experience the excitement of the bush and the Harmony it brings. In an age of celebrity, uMfolozi is a space where travellers can encounter the true Stars – the beasts of the wild and the council of Zulu Chiefs who support them. Embrace the excitement that only the Stars of the wild can bring, indulge in our heritage.

Here, in the uMfolozi Wilderness area, is where 5 descendants of King Shaka’s Chiefs have given tribal land to increase the capacity of Hluhluwe iMfolozi, the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa. uMfolozi’s “Big Five” conservation pioneers include the iNkosis Mthembu, Biyela, Zulu, Mthembu and Mthethwa. Their forward-thinking will result in land usage that benefits their people for generations to come and allows species with the reserve to reproduce in a larger protected area. BIYELA LODGE

A true wilderness experience from one of the first of two Lodges to have a Concession area along the White iMfolozi River. Biyela Lodge is nestled on a spectacular bend on the river. From afar – the thatched peaks perched on a flat stone roof are reminiscent of a traditional Zulu homestead. On the other side of the river are dramatic cliffs which are used by vultures in the early morning to launch to the skies on thermals. To the right, when one is on the lodge viewing deck, another set of cliffs mark the entrance to the valley where one of King Shaka’s most rebellious commanders, Mzilikazi, and his clan hid from the wrath of the King.

On the banks of the river, the scarce sighting of wild dog has been noted amidst the steady stream of animals that come to quench their thirst and the roar of lions punctuate the wilderness night. In this heady symphony of natural wonders, a privileged few can luxuriate in private stand-alone villas, with access to a central lodge with a pool, boma, restaurant, bar, and lodge viewing deck.On the doorstep of nature at work, a mere 32 guests at most can enjoy their luxurious private stand-alone suites, with access to a central lodge with pool, restaurant, bar, spa and viewing decks. The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed protected Game Reserve area in South Africa, dating back to 1895.
It is in these valleys where King Shaka of the Zulus, unbeknown to the world, pioneered a culture of conservation long before the concept was coined by European settlers. It is here, amidst these timeless, undulating hills, where visitors will be able to walk in the footsteps of giants, past and present. The DNA of all white rhinos alive in Africa today can be traced back to the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. Once the royal hunting grounds for the Zulu kingdom, this is where the first steps with Operation Rhino were taken almost seventy years ago under the guidance of revered conservationist, the late Dr. Ian Player.

Includes: Accommodation, all meals, two game drives per day and selected local beverages.
