The waters around the Bazaruto Archipelago World Heritage Site and National Park are an ecological paradise. At 1400km², it is one of the largest marine conservation areas in the Indian Ocean. Dive Bazaruto are a Padi Certified Dive Centre that offers fantastic diving opportunities in an underwater world ranking alongside Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – the Bazaruto Archipelago.

With sites at a depth of 12 to 30 m and visibility up to 40 m you will find reefs teeming with life, including dolphin, hump back whales, whale sharks, sharks, manta and spotted eagle rays, game fish, green turtles and giant lobster. The endangered dugong of which only a very small number still exist, swim in the shallow crystal clear waters that are also home to starfish, soft and hard corals, anemones, seahorses and an array of beautiful tropical fish. Other dive sites are located on the seaward side of San Sebastian (south of the islands on the mainland peninsular), a point jutting out in line with the islands. From San Sebastian, the mainland curves south west to form a large bay which is protected from rough seas by the point and the islands.

The Bazaruto Archipelago is pretty much a year-round fishery. Black Marlin come to spawn along the Bazaruto Archipelago’s coastline between September and January, with numerous catches over 1000lbs – the average catch is 300 – 600lbs. Blue and Striped Marlin are also caught during this time of year.

Big game and heavy tackle fishing is at its best in the summer months between September to April, but sailfish peak in winter between May and September and plugging, spinning, jigging, conventional light tackle game fishing and fly fishing for an array of species is excellent all year round.

Vilanculos is renowned for its superb variety of white sand beaches, alluring golden sunsets and tall palm trees. The beach stretches for tens of kilometres allowing riders plenty of opportunities for exhilarating canters and long trots. The views from the towering cliffs overlooking the Bazaruto Archipelago are extraordinary and will be a memory you will never forget.

Mandy Retclaff, the writer of 104 horses owns the beautiful stables a 45 minute drive from Santorini. There are a variety of rides along the coast and inland that cater for beginners to experienced riders. The spirit of fun and adventure runs deep at Mozambique Horse Safari so saddle up and enjoy a truly unique African adventure on our wonderful horses.

Whether you’re a total beginner or wanting to push your kite surfing skills to the next level, there is a range of courses to meet your needs. Best of all – the kite surfing school will come to you and your lesson will be here on the shores of Santorini.

Experience the allure of the Bazaruto Archipelago from above.

While relaxing aboard with the Captain’s full attention, passengers can experience the Bazaruto Archipelago with its scenic wonders. From the elegance of flamingos, the amazing sea life such as Dugongs, crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, beautiful sunsets, golden dunes, historic lighthouses and pristine islands to nature’s art work in the form of ripples in sand and water.

Spend the day cruising on Aphrodite, Santorini’s luxurious catamaran, and drop anchor for a refreshing dip in the sea and a lazy lunch onboard or get a taste of tradition, sailing into the sunset on Santorini’s private dhow, with sundowners and canapés prepared by Santorini’s chefs.

Aphrodite, Santorini’s luxurious Supercat 38 Sport, is the ultimate vessel for exploring the enchanting islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Sun lovers are drawn to toast lightly amidst a dreamy siesta on the front trampoline, while others are enticed to the water for a snorkel with the myriad colours of reef fish and corals. The canopy beckons you into the shade for a tantalising picnic-style lunch and the fridge is fully stocked with iced water and assorted beverages of your choice. Whether you are a couple or group of friends and family, its spacious open-plan design can comfortably accommodate private charters with ease.

Formerly known as Ilha Santa Isabel prior to Mozambican Independence, Magaruque was the first island to break away from the mainland sand-spit peninsula created by the Save River, which has since shifted its course. Magaruque Island is much smaller than its neighbours in the Archipelago at about 3 square kilometres. Conveniently situated closest to Vilanculos with its own reef, it is a haven for snorkellers wanting to discover its underwater beauty. Despite its size, it is still the third largest island in the Archipelago and is home to a small population attracted by the fertile fishing grounds along the deep-sea channel.

Highlights include: snorkelling, swimming, picnic lunch and drinks.

Benguerra Island, once called Santo António by Portuguese explorers, is the second largest island in the Archipelago, yet is considerably smaller than its nearest neighbour at just 25 square kilometres. The island’s calm seas teem with tropical marine life and its diverse landscape contains an indigenous milkwood forest and wetland areas making it a sanctuary for small Suni antelope and around 140 species of bird. It is usually the best place to spot the famous pink flamingos and Nile crocodiles found in the island’s three freshwater lakes.

Highlights include: excellent swimming, snorkelling at Two Mile reef, a visit to Pansy Island, picnic lunch and drinks.

Santa Carolina, also known as Paradise Island, is the smallest island of five that make up the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park. Bob Dylan famously composed his song ‘Mozambique’ whilst sitting on its shores. In the 1950s Joaquim Alves, a flamboyant Portuguese businessman, controlled the coastline from Beira to Vilanculos and married a local Mozambican lady called Donna Anna. He built a grand 250 bed hotel on Santa Carolina which was frequented by honeymooners and tourists for 20 years. Mozambique was in the middle of an independence war and in 1973 Joaquim abandoned the hotel. Today you can still feel the atmosphere as you walk around the now deserted hotel. Paradise Island is surrounded by 3 coral reefs rich in marine life and is everything its nickname suggests – paradise.

Highlights include: exploring the remains of the island’s old hotel and church, snorkelling off the beach, excellent swimming, picnic lunch and drinks.

Bazaruto is the largest island in the Archipelago measuring around 120 square kilometres. A number of resorts dot its white-sand shores, yet it remains an unspoiled destination with a diverse ecosystem. Bazaruto Island is well known for its sand dunes and at the same time is blessed with freshwater lakes that provide the local population with drinking water. It is most famous for the long barrier reef situated between Bazaruto and Benguerra called Two Mile, which has been voted the best diving location in Mozambique featuring numerous dive spots at various depths. The reef is home to thousands of species of fish and corals, exciting swim-throughs, rocks and overhangs, as well as five species of turtles, nurse sharks and one of the world’s last viable populations of dugong.

Highlights include: snorkelling at Two Mile reef, hiking up the sand dunes, a visit to Pansy Island, picnic lunch and drink

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a fisherman’s paradise, offering year-round opportunities to land a memorable catch. All fishing tackle is taken care of by our knowledgeable skippers, who know these waters intimately and can guide you in fishing for different species, from Job Fish, Bonito and Mackerel to impressive Tuna, GTs, Dorado and Wahoo depending on the season. Aphrodite is fully-equipped with a fighting chair and outriggers.

The Bazaruto Archipelago has thriving, unspoilt coral reefs and drop offs at varying depths. The abundance of bait fish from the bay areas attract large numbers of gamefish which make it the ideal fly-fishing destination.

Please note that fly-fishing and bill fishing are outsourced activities.
