In our daily lives, “survival of the fittest” is taken to mean survival of the strongest, most aggressive, most competitive. But that’s not what that term means. “Survival of the fittest” quite literally, means survival of that which “fits” best – which fits into the system around it, symbiotically. In other words, survival of that which collaborates with other organisms, something that nature has learnt to do.

Your 4 day safari will show you the human intervention and collaboration needed to ensure the survival of Rhino, and you will also visit the Rhino orphanage and witness young rhino who have survived and have adapted to fit into their “new norms” – a truly emotional experience.

Take the opportunity to spend time with friends and / or family to learn from nature – reconnect, collaborate and embrace this strength of mind to survive these difficult times by making the best decisions to fit into the system around us during the Covid-19 recovery period.

Just 2 hours north of Hluhluwe in the heart of Northern Zululand, this Big 5, family run, 5 Star, multi-award winning game lodge is located high up in the wild secluded hills of the 58 000 acre endangered species protected area of the Manyoni Private Game Reserve, with spectacular views overlooking a vast stretch of unspoilt bush veld and riverine forests, from the Umsunduze River meandering below to the distant Lebombo Mountains. Join us in an environment where conservation is of utmost importance and a priority in our everyday living.

Your stay at the lodge is in a luxurious, well-appointed luxury suites. The rooms have air conditioners for hot days and are equipped with large, open showers that have incredible views over the valley below and are a light and spacious haven of peace and tranquillity to relax and unwind in. By day, laze in your hammock or private plunge pool and watch the eagles soar at eye level over the plains below and by night, marvel at the magnificence of millions of stars under the African night sky. Your private balcony is the perfect place to have a glass of sherry and watch the moon rising over the mountains.

As you can expect from a stay at Leopard Mountain, your food experience will be truly magnificent as we provide you with a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ and unforgettable African safari experience. Whether you are dining under the stars in the boma, on the main deck or in the dining room, our meals promise to be impressively delectable.

Manyoni is home to a number of endangered species ranging from wild dog, cheetah, white and black rhino, vultures and pangolins. The threat to these species is significant and numbers are declining. Protection of these species are in the hands of our dedicated management team and field rangers. We would like to invite you to join us on an unforgettable experience and the behind-the-scenes glimpse into the conservation work on Manyoni and give you the opportunity to experience hands-on conservation work while contributing to those very same projects. We invite you to come on an adventure with us whilst possibly even getting your hands dirty and your heart involved. This is an opportunity to see first-hand how our wildlife have had to adapt to survive, much like us humans have had to during Covid-19 and living with the ‘new norm’ during the Covid-19 recovery period.

Your 3 night stay will include a visit to the Zululand Rhino Orphanage which is a specialised facility and a fantastic initiative which aims at rescuing and rehabilitating baby rhino when their mothers have passed away either from poaching or natural causes. So far they have an excellent track record with a good number of reintroductions back to the wild. During your visit you will be able to see how the facility is run and how the orphans are being cared for.

*Please note that this is a rehabilitation facility and we therefore limit human interaction with the animals. A maximum of 6 guests can be accommodated per visit. The visits last an hour. Guests are not permitted to take their own photos however a staff member will take photos for you during your visit. Visits are subject to availability, and will be restricted when new calves arrive or are undergoing treatment.

You will also have the opportunity to join our wildlife management team on a unique rhino dehorning experience. Rhino dehorning has proven to be an effective measure to deter rhino poaching. You will be able to get up close to wild rhino whilst assisting the team in collecting DNA samples and taking measurements, all of this contributing to the protection of the species. The procedure is not harmful in any way and our veterinarian and wildlife management team is highly experienced ensuring the welfare of the rhino during the procedure. This experience is deeply emotional for some, especially when realising that the only hope is to for us to transform our rhino to live with the ‘new norm’ of no horn in order to survive, like us humans have had to take the necessary precautions for our own survival due to Covid-19. Apart from these two conservation-focused activities, you will also have the opportunity of joining your wildlife ranger on Big 5 morning and afternoon Big 5 game drives in open 4×4 game viewers as well as visits to the unique wildlife hide with one-way glass where you will be able to watch as an array of animals come down to drink. We will stop for refreshments on the drives in the bush for a chance to stretch your legs and enjoy the peace and quiet of the wilderness.
